From Casual to Complex: 7 Trends that Shaped Gaming 2024

Deconstructor of Fun

What defines a game’s success post-launch today? Sure, the product still reigns, but as Daniel Tchernahovsky, VP, of Global BD at AppLovin , sees it, today’s game success hinges on two strategic questions. First: what’s your creative edge—what’s going to make your game stand out in an endless market of competitors? Second: how robust is your BI system in supporting long-term growth confidently?

Yasuyuki Oda on why it's taken over a quarter of a century for a new Fatal Fury game

GamesIndustry.biz

The Fatal Fury fighting game series stretches all the way back to 1991, when SNK Corporation released Fatal Fury: King of Fighters for arcades. The franchise had numerous iterations in the 90s, with Garou: Mark of the Wolves (1999) being the last – at least until now. A quarter of a century after Mark of the Wolves came out, we find ourselves sitting in SNK's booth at the Tokyo Game Show, eagerly playing the upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.

As stated in my previous post , my goal is to improve the robustness of the Untold Engine by focusing on developing various games. I was thinking of a game to make, and I thought about how much my kids love car games. So, I decided to develop one. I went to BlenderMarket to check out any car assets I could use, and I found a nice City asset. My idea is for the car to drive around the city.

Only a handful of studios in Slovakia generate the lion share of game revenues

PreMortem.Games

Top image: The House of Tesla by Blue Brain Games This year the Slovakian games industry is expected to generate an estimated €70.3 million in turnover, slightly up from €70.1 million in 2023, but a long way removed from the pandemic-induced highs of 2021 and 2022 (€80 million and €77.1 million respectively). The fact that the top 10% of companies in Slovakia are responsible for 83.5% of all revenues is a strong indication that the industry is still unbalanced.

Is it common for Gameplay Programmers to also work in other areas (rendering, engine, tools, etc) while on the same project? Why does that happen?

Ask a Game Dev

It happens on occasion, but not super often. Usually, you want a subject matter expert to handle issues with the subject - an engine programmer to work on the engine, a rendering programmer to work on the renderer, and so on. The reason for this should be obvious - you want an expert to do the work so that the best work gets done and you get your money's worth from paying that expert to be an expert.

Is there much of a difference between a digital media degree and a game design degree when it comes to applying for jobs within the gaming sector? Or is it dependent on the role you are applying for?

Ask a Game Dev

There is a difference between having a degree and not having one in a relevant field, but it isn't as important as one might think. The kind of degree you hold really only matters for the initial application round, where the recruiters sift through all of the applications and decide who gets callbacks and who gets dropped. This is because, realistically, we can't call every applicant back for each open position.
