Building a car racing game with the Untold Engine - Part II

Harold Serrano

I've been building a video game with the Untold Engine, a game engine I developed. I wanted to create a racing car video game for my kids. I figured that it would make them happy. You can read part I here. I showed the current state of the game to my kids. To my surprise, they didn't like the direction of the game. I was wrong in assuming they would like a cartoonish type of video game.

How to deal with project management where every task is high-urgent priority? Even the simple ones that are easy to fix and don’t have such a big impact as other real-high priority tasks. I work on a small game dev outsourcing company and I want to give this feedback to them but I don’t really know how

Ask a Game Dev

The best way I've found to communicate something like this to someone else is to frame it in a way that makes sense and show how it affects their goals. In this case, production cares about overall throughput - they want to get the high priority issues addressed as quickly as possible. Don't tell them what to do - very few people respond well to that, especially if the person telling them isn't their boss.

How much do early/initial sales matter for the “succes” of a game? I often notice people saying that a game looks good but wait for a sale to pick it up. I understand that could be because mostly of budget reasons. But I do wonder if/how that affects developers/studios/etc.

Ask a Game Dev

The majority of a game's success comes from the size of its player base. Most games have a projected player count band they expect to reach (either via sales or free to play). I say band because predicting exact numbers is hard but it's more reasonable to expect somewhere between X and Y overall players. Every game has a minimum number of players it needs to reach in order to be considered a success.
